Claude SEO and GEO: Can an Export Website Really Take Off?

“We used Claude to improve the SEO, and the independent site suddenly took off.” Stories like this are attracting attention among export business owners. The claim contains a real opportunity, but the shortcut is misleading.

Overseas buyers are no longer using Google only to type a product name. They ask AI tools longer questions: Which supplier can handle a small custom order? Is this machine suitable for a hot workshop? What documents are needed for a certain market? The answer may include a shortlist of suppliers, and a company website can gain an important first visit.

That visit is not an inquiry yet. The buyer still needs to understand what the company makes, whether the product fits the project and whether the information can be trusted. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is useful when it helps the website answer those questions clearly. It is not a magic phrase or a switch that guarantees AI recommendations.

An AI mention is only the beginning

An AI answer can shorten the research stage, but it does not replace a supplier check. Before contacting an exporter, a purchasing manager may compare capacity, materials, certifications, delivery time, spare parts and technical support.

General claims such as “leading manufacturer” and “competitive price” do little at this stage. They do not show whether the business is a factory, a trading company or a distributor. They do not explain which products are made in-house or which applications the supplier handles regularly.

The practical GEO question is simple: after an AI tool mentions your company, can the buyer verify why it was mentioned? If the answer is no, more visibility will not solve the real problem.

Make the website visible to the right crawlers

Claude does not access the web in exactly the same way as Google. Anthropic has published different crawler identities for different purposes, including ClaudeBot and Claude-User. Names and functions can change, so an old list copied from a forum should not be treated as a permanent technical rule.

Check the current Anthropic guidance, then review robots.txt, CDN settings, firewall rules and server logs. A public product page should return a normal 200 response, use a stable canonical URL and expose its important text without requiring a login, a verification challenge or a click that triggers unreliable JavaScript.

Do not simply allow every automated request. Admin areas, customer files, quotation forms and test pages still need protection. The aim is to make useful public content accessible while keeping private areas closed.

Use Claude to find content gaps

A useful audit starts with the pages AI tools already cite. Ask Claude to compare a competitor page and your equivalent page using only visible, checkable information. The comparison can cover product identity, application conditions, specification context, evidence and the next step available to a buyer.

This produces a more useful result than asking why Claude “likes” a competitor. Perhaps the other page explains material compatibility, operating limits and spare parts, while yours contains only a model number, a few photographs and a contact button. The issue is not an invisible preference. The buyer simply has less information to use.

AI output still needs human review. It can confuse models, mistake a distributor for a manufacturer or overlook a limitation. Use it to discover blind spots, not as a final judge of technical accuracy.

Write pages that can be quoted accurately

The opening of a product page should identify the product, its typical application and the main selection condition. Further headings can follow real buyer questions: What materials does it handle? Where does performance change? How does the standard model differ from a custom configuration? What should a buyer include in a quotation request?

Numbers need context. A stated capacity should include the material or test condition behind it. A certification claim should identify the covered model and market. A promise of fast support is more useful when the page explains spare-parts availability, installation guidance and the way technical problems are reported.

Product, organization and article schema can help search systems interpret a page when the markup matches visible content. Schema is not a special Claude ranking switch. FAQ markup should represent genuine questions and answers, rather than a batch of invented text. A real author name, publication date and update date also make technical content easier to assess.

Build trust beyond the homepage

An AI answer may send a buyer to an article instead of a quotation page. The article should lead naturally to the relevant product category, model comparison or application page. A product page can then collect the model, quantity, destination market, application and expected purchase time.

External references can strengthen this path when they are genuine: a certification record, trade publication, exhibition profile or public customer case gives the company more than its own claims. Industry questions answered in a relevant community, a useful guest article or a technical discussion can also create a discovery path. The link should support the explanation, not turn the page into an advertisement.

More links cannot repair a thin product page. External visibility works best when the destination already contains information worth checking.

Measure the conversation, not the screenshot

AI referrals do not always appear clearly in analytics. A buyer may see a company in Claude, remember the name and return later through Google or direct traffic. A screenshot showing one recommendation is not enough to measure results.

Watch branded searches, repeat visits to important product pages, document downloads, quotation-form starts and the quality of the inquiries received. Ask new contacts how they found the company. A useful improvement is not merely more visits; it is a buyer arriving with a specific application, quantity or technical question.

Claude SEO and GEO will not automatically create orders. Their value is more practical: they push an export website to explain its products, evidence and buying process in a way both people and AI systems can understand. An AI mention may open the door. A clear, verifiable website determines whether the buyer walks through it.
