Definition and classification of pickup trucks

The so-called pickup truck, in fact, does not have a very clear definition. It basically refers to a vehicle that can pull people and goods and has an open cargo compartment behind the cab. The American people generally refer to pickup trucks directly as trucks, that is, trucks. Many large SUVs and vans are sometimes collectively referred to as trucks.

In a narrow sense, a pickup truck generally refers to a non-load-bearing body with an engine compartment in front of the cab and an open cargo hopper at the back. It is designed to carry cargo, but it is not as big as a large commercial truck. For example, large pickups such as Ford F-150 and Tantu, and small pickups such as Great Wall and Isuzu, which are common in China.

In a broad sense, pickups can be counted as those that meet the definition of "with an open cargo hopper, capable of carrying people and pulling goods", including many mini-vans in Japan, as well as sports pickups that are common on the same platform as cars in Australia and New Zealand. UTE also includes some derivative pickup trucks SUT on the same platform as large off-road vehicles, and even some military vehicles and special vehicles.

Mini pickup

Such small trucks are generally dominated by Japanese manufacturers, and some can even be attributed to the ranks of K-car. Such small pickup trucks can also be seen in China, Southeast Asia and other regions. All major Japanese manufacturers have such mini pickups, and the competition in this market segment still looks fierce. These small trucks are economical, practical, inexpensive, convenient to park, and easy to maintain. Although they are small in size and average in performance, they do a little business by themselves and usually pull some ordinary goods. This kind of small pickup truck is the most suitable.

For example, these mini pickups that look fat, square-headed and square-headed are from Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. The reason why they look and size are almost the same, mainly because their design just meets the upper limit of the Japanese law on K-car regulations, so that you can enjoy the preferential policies of K-car in parking, taxes and other aspects.

Pickup in a narrow sense

Now we enter the real pickup truck in a narrow sense. Just like cars, there are mini-cars such as Fiat 500 and Chery QQ, as well as behemoths such as Mercedes-Benz S600 and BMW 760. The size, performance, and price are very different. The same is true for pickup trucks. For example, Isuzu D-max and Ford F-350 are obviously not the same models. When many friends talk about the performance, fuel consumption, taxes, policies, etc. of pickup trucks, they often don’t realize that the interior of pickup trucks is very different, and generalizations are not appropriate.

In view of the fact that Meidi is considered to be the most developed market for pickup trucks, let's take a look at how Meidi divides pickup trucks. For pickup trucks, including trucks in a broad sense, the U.S. government uses the total weight of the vehicles to classify them, which is the so-called gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Different types of trucks have different standards for driving licenses, taxes, environmental protection, etc. The total weight refers to the maximum total weight when the vehicle is full of fuel and full of people and goods. In fact, it is the actual total weight when it is driven on the road. Why use this? The main reason is that the weighing station on the side of the expressway can measure this weight. The truck drives directly onto the weighing scale and weighs it, which is the most convenient for actual operation. If you specify the weight of the empty car or the weight of the cargo, you have to weigh it during the actual enforcement, and you have to unload the cargo first. Isn’t this a trouble?

The total weight of this type of truck is less than 6000 pounds, or 2.7 tons. Pickup trucks that meet this standard can be subdivided into two categories, compact pickup trucks and medium-sized pickup trucks. There is no clear standard for the distinction between the two. Sometimes due to market competition and publicity considerations, the division of different manufacturers is not the same, so it is just a rough reference.

Are there any special requirements for driving such a large pickup truck?

Different states in the United States may have different requirements. For example, Georgia’s regulations are very lenient. An ordinary driver’s license can drive a vehicle with a total weight of 26,000 pounds or less. This 26,000 pounds is 11.8 tons, which is the dividing line between Class 6 and Class 7. In other words, ordinary people can drive Class 1 to Class 6 vehicles. For example, in the legal sense, I can legally drive a Ford F-650 on the road... Only Class 7 and above vehicles require a special driver’s license, which is so-called CDL (Commercial Driver's License).

In order to win the highest safety award, the vehicle must achieve high scores in a series of evaluations such as small-area offset impact, moderate offset impact, side strength, roof strength, and head protection device tests for the driver and occupants. In the frontal collision prevention and headlight tests, the test car must also achieve a good result.

The 2019 Ford Ranger is positioned as a two-row mid-size pickup truck. The new car has achieved Good results in the five IIHS crash tests, but it is Acceptable in the headlight test. Therefore, unfortunately, the new car has the highest score. The safety award was missed, but this is already the leading level in the mid-size pickup segment.

The 2019 Ford Ranger is equipped with a front collision prevention system as standard, which achieves collision avoidance at a speed of 12 mph (approximately 19 km/h) and 25 mph (approximately 39 km/h). A high score was obtained in this test. In the headlight test, the 2019 Ford Ranger pickup truck model provides a total of three optional headlight configurations, but none of them exceed the acceptable (Acceptable).

The full name of IIHS is Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. As an important part of the world's safety standards, the organization conducts systematic and professional crash tests in Europe and America every year, and the safety performance index is The car models of various manufacturers are divided into stars to promote the investment of various car manufacturers in safety research.
